Discoloration Causes

Over time, your teeth starts to change it’s color. It may happen for several reasons, such as:

Age

With age, enamel gets thinner so the underneath layer, which is called dentin, starts to shine through. Dentin is a lot yellower than enamel, so teeth in general look darker, because of  dentin.

Extrinsic

Extrinsic stains may appear because of many different external reasons. It may happen if you like to smoke, drink coffee, red wine, tea, etc. Enamel can stain because of food also: the pigments attaches to enamel and causes teeth discoloration.

Intrinsic

This happens because of tooth inner structure reorganization: with time, the dentin darkens and gets yellower. That may happen because of trauma, medications or excessive amounts of fluoride usage during the childhood.

The Zoom Procedure

Before the procedure teeth cleaning it’s recommended to remove plaque and calculus. First, we have to protect the lips and gums and leave the teeth exposed then we apply whitening gel which consists hydrogen peroxide. The Zoom light and whitening gel penetrates beneath the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration. The total treatment is 45 minutes long and it is sectioned for three 15-minute sessions of light activation.

Aftercare: Maintaining Whitening Effects

To get the maximum result of the treatment you must consider to avoid using tobacco products or colorful drinks  (like coffee, tea, red wine, cola, etc) and certain foods. You will have to use touch-up kit and maintain a proper oral hygiene and visit your hygienist regularly for scheduled teeth cleanings.

Your dentist may suggest you using toothpastes with whitening agents to maintain maximum results after the procedure.

Considerations

The Zoom light produces a little heat, so it can cause teeth sensitivity, which may feel uncomfortable. You can ask your dentist anti-sensitivity toothpaste prior the treatment, so it would lessen the symptoms.

Whitening products is not recommended for children under 13 years of age, and for pregnant or lactating women.

Moreover, whitening procedure for some of the people may be less effective than to others. It depends on individual tooth tissues structure which is not the same for everyone. So you need to consult with your dentist whether you can get your teeth whitened or no and find out how it will perform specifically in your mouth.
